Sound Designer for a piece involved in the New Season works, XL Bully by Stef Smith, Directed by Rob Watt. Performed in the Studio at the Sherman Theatre and New Diorama Theatre.

Eight friends take a shortcut home after a night out. They end up trapped in a locked room, with something unseen waiting on the other side of the door. As the pressure builds, jokes sharpen, tensions rise, and fear starts to take over. What begins as a darkly comic situation slowly shifts into something stranger and more unsettling. A tense, funny, and provocative new play by Stef Smith about fear, responsibility, and the stories we tell ourselves when we feel threatened.

behind the scenes

This production posed a very interesting challenge…

How do we make the audience believe there is a dog behind that door?

Here’s a quick look at how I achieved this effect.

We had an ASM behind the door acting as our dog and I used contact microphones, along with a speaker placed behind the door to amplify the sound being created.

For the dog noises I used a combination of pre recorded sound effects and some field recordings I captured of a dog who visited us in pre-production.
